Color Switch is the latest offering from indie mobile developer Fortafy Games. This is probably the epitome of the term ‘simple gameplay’, as this game is literally about matching colors to cross obstacles on a 2D puzzle field. Don’t be deceived by the simple nature however, as this is like the Rubik’s Cube of app gaming- a lot harder than it looks and a true challenge for your brain. This free game is a great addition to any puzzle lover’s app collection.
Deceptively basic, with hidden challenges
Color Switch has the age-old idea of ‘easy to learn, difficult to master’ down to an art. At first, you’ll be presented with a multi-colored obstacle and expected to get a ball through it. You have to match the color pattern to cross the obstacle, so it’s a test of hand-eye coordination, timing and memory. Sounds easy enough, but it soon gets very complex and tricky! If you love to be challenged, this game will do it. The impressive thing is that it really is a very simple idea and involves no fancy graphics or gimmicks, just a classic puzzle idea translated to the digital screen. As such it’s ideal as a mobile game, one which will keep you busy at bus stops and through many lunch breaks!
Lights, colours, action!
There’s a reason why Color Switch has been downloaded 80,000,000 times… it’s good. It may not look like much, but often the smartest games don’t. Saying that, the actual graphical quality is very good, just not complex. The colors are bold and sharp, really making the most of next-gen mobile displays. It’s also incredibly easy to learn, using icons and shapes to guide you along. This game really falls into the ‘addictive gameplay’ category, as each time you lose by passing through the wrong color, you’ll just want one more crack at that level. The design has been very well molded to present a rising arc of difficulty without putting you off too soon. The game adds complexity via shapes, giving you circles, crosses, triangles and lines to get your ball through, plus you can upgrade your ball with pickups that change the dynamic of the game. Add to this a variety of game modes and trophies and you’ll soon be hooked. The new Control mode is endless and lets you train your precision, plus there are daily challenges to let you earn in-game star currency.
Something new and colourful
Color Switch is a boldly designed app, which many will dismiss as just being colored shapes on a screen. If you like puzzles, tests of coordination or simply like challenges, give this game a try. You’ll soon be hooked. The only downsides are that it’s pretty repetitive and the audio isn’t very exciting, but that’s a minor concern with mobile games where you tend to have the sound low anyway. Try this game for something easy to pick up, ideal for a quick play between meetings or at lunch.
